The best way to tame your temper is to stop, breath and do not say anything right away. It is always helpful to not be reactive to what others may say or do. As you begin to calm down, thinking will be clearer and the opportunity to handle matters the way that you really want is still there. People will try to provoke certain responses from you by saying things that will boil you over, but do not be that predictable, remember to stop and just breath. There were times when in my heart I would just say the name Jesus while the person in front of me was trying hard to press every button I have. It did not work, my joy was not theirs to take or diminish. All of my buttons were still unpressed and my day went well.
It is really good to give yourself a break, if you get upset, take a brief walk, drink some water, inhale through the nose exhale through the mouth, if you can listen to music or hear the song within, recite scriptures in your heart, tell yourself that it is all o.k., you will control your temper not an outside source. It makes a difference for your state of mind and your physical wellness. Why give yourself a headache, because you gave someone permission to get you that upset. Take control of your temper, just because someone says something way, way, way out left field does not mean that it yields a response. Sometimes, we feel that we have to prove that no one is going to just step all over us, but not responding can keep your temper from elevating and actually show others that you are not going to be moved by ignorance. I would never say do not speak up, but do it when necessary, save your oxygen for something important.
If you are now in a situation that challenges your temper control just begin to practice not responding quickly and think about how you will handle the situation or if you need even respond, you can tell the person calmly what point you need to get across and end it, so that it will not become an exchange. Avoid being effected by wasteful comments that take precious moments out of your day. Others will then begin to realize that they need to move along, because you will not allow them to negatively affect you. It is not worth your time and especially it is not worth your spiritual, emotional or physical health. We all have the ability to tame our tempers and just keep things moving beyond drama and hype. Most importantly, always pray for calm and peace in the face of any adversity.
